A track day is the ultimate test of both rider and machine. Arriving prepared — with a correctly set-up motorcycle and the right components — is the difference between a frustrating day of mechanical issues and a transformative experience that improves your riding permanently. This guide covers the essential preparation steps.
Brake System
Replace brake fluid with fresh DOT 5.1 or Castrol SRF before every track day. Check pad thickness — if pads are below 3mm, replace them before the event. Inspect brake lines for cracking or abrasion. If your motorcycle still has rubber brake lines, upgrade to braided stainless lines before your first track day — the improvement in feel and consistency is immediate and significant.
Suspension Setup
Set sag correctly for your weight in full riding gear. Front sag should typically be 25-35mm; rear sag 25-30mm. Increase compression and rebound damping slightly from road settings — track surfaces are generally smoother than roads, and the higher speeds generate more suspension load. If your motorcycle has adjustable preload, increase it slightly to raise the ride height and sharpen steering.
Tyres
Fit fresh tyres if your current set has significant wear or is more than two years old. Track day tyre pressures are typically lower than road pressures — start with manufacturer recommendations and adjust based on tyre temperature and feel. Tyre warmers are strongly recommended if permitted at your event; cold tyres on a cold morning are a significant safety risk.
Safety Checks
Check all fasteners for correct torque, particularly wheel spindles, brake caliper bolts, and handlebar clamps. Tape over mirrors, indicators, and headlights. Remove or tape over any sharp protrusions. Check engine oil level and condition. Ensure the chain is correctly tensioned and lubricated. Carry out a final walk-around inspection before going out for your first session.
